Leyla smiles. "That's exactly what I meant. And, we can also learn about others, just as well, as they learn about us."

Thea smiles. "Yeah, its fun to learn about new people."
She looks up at Leyla contentedly.

Leyla leans in, as she presses the button, to recall the turboelevator.
"When is your next class?"

Thea thinks for a second.
"I have a class with Master Yoda tomorrow morning, History of the Republic, I really like that one."

Leyla looks at her, a little surprised.
"Really? That's great, you like that class. Not many students are that interested in history anymore. But, even though it's all about the past, we can learn from previous mistakes. And Master Yoda is a great storyteller."

Thea giggles a little.
"Yes he is a very good storyteller, and I would definitely rather learn from the mistakes some people have made than ever have to face some of the resulting circumstances myself! And sometimes I feel like Master Yoda was actually there for more things than he lets on."

Leyla giggles a little, as well.
"You may be correct. He's had a long and full life. But, if he's telling stories that would have involved himself, then he wouldn't say. In some waysit would look, he thinks highly of himself. And that's very unlike Master Yoda."

Thea laughs aloud.
"Yeah, he's definitely old. And he never really answers us when we ask him directly if he was there for some of the more important events. But he will tell us about adventures he had as a student, and the lessons he learned from them, particularly if he catches us starting to do something we shouldn't."
Thea pauses a moment, "Its hard to picture Master Yoda as a child at the Temple. There isn't anyone else left alive that knew him then, is there?"

Leyla smiles, a little sadly.
"Well, there is Master Chapaa'ai, who's older than Master Yoda. So yes, there is at least one left." She sighs a little. "But I think that, given his age, he has agreed with himself, that death is a natural part of life. No one can escape it. Some people, die at an old age, and can prepare for death, with the thought in mind, that as a Jedi, you have done a great service to the people of this galaxy. But ..." she sighs again, by the thought of the loss of her own Padawan. "... there are of course those that die suddenly. Those loses are the hardest to cope with."
She's silent for a moment, as the elevator doors open, but doesn't move. In the end, she smiles at Thea. "Though, I know what you mean, about picturing Yoda at a young age. It's a strange thought. But I think that's the case with all students and their teachers."

Thea nods.
"I've only seen him at a distance. I knew he was old but not how old. I don't think it is impossible to picture every teacher younger - but Master Yoda is so old."
Thea thinks about the rest of what Leyla is saying for a moment.
"Because the Jedi help people everwhere, do they also see more sudden deaths than most?"

Leyla thinks for a moment, sighing.
"Unless you are a soldier at war or a hired hitman, then unfortunately yes. But, if at war, it is the Jedi's duty, to keep civilians safe and unharmed. It is also there, that the public critizice us most. If there's been severe civilian casualties, they blame us." She stops, thinking, before continuing.
"But, what the public don't always think about is, that Jedi also suffer loses. We maybe bad at, not expressing our feelings about it to them, but it's a fact."

"Is there anything we can do to help people understand we don't want them to be hurt, or our own?"

Leyla shrugs.
"Maybe. But, it's hard, when the Fallen Jedi's running around, killing people. Until this crisis has been solved, we can only give them our word, and make sure, that no one gets hurt. But, it is also a bad habit of others, to interfere with Jedi business, which is unwise, unless we ask them to step in."

Thea giggles.
"You would think people would know to stay out of Jedi business, its common sense. Even us Younglings know to stay away when you get serious! But the Fallen Jedi are a problem, people probably think they are still part of us, don't they?"

Leyla smiles big.
"You're right. They should know that. But, they think they can handle what we can. And yes, they don't know how to tell us a part, unless they are well informed. What confuses them, is that they used to be Jedi, but aren't anymore, but they still act like Jedi, with the lightsabers and the use of the Force, but in a bad way. Some ..." she thinks for a moment, before continuing. "... idiots, try to convince people, that, they are fiction, made up by us. Maybe in a big plot or something. They fail to realise, that the Fallen, wish to get more power and will stop at nothing to get it. We've done nothing of that."
She sighs a bid. "I think, they play around with the memory of past Jedi's who went to the Dark Side, and became Siths. That something like that is happening again."

"What can we do about them?"
She adds in a whisper, "And why would anyone want to leave the Jedi Order?"

Leyla stops smiling, as Thea asks the second question. That was a very good question.
"What we can do about them, is finding ways to stop them, before they do something really serious. But they're moves are very difficult to predict."
She takes a deep breath, before answering. "And there's different reasons why, some chooses to leave the Order. The Fallen did it, because they wished for something, that the Order couldn't give them. And ... people like me, left, because ..." she looks at Thea with a sad smile. "... I fail to see the reason why now, but I felt I'd had it a bid, with being watched over, at that time. Which may have been a rather rash dicision."

"You left? But you are here... Couldn't it have been more of a vacation? I mean... you really left? and thought you weren't coming back?"

Leyla and begins to think, that the hallway is not that good a place to talk about this. She steps into the elevator and presses a random button, while she expects Thea to step in, as well.
"I was away from the Order for five years. Right up until, I was positioned here on this ship. I wouldn't call it a vacation, seeing as I left my duties as a Jedi behind."

"But what did you do for that long? And why? Did something happen before that you needed to get away from?"

Leyla takes a deep breath, before answering.
"I was, at that time, appointed to field missions. And I had a Padawan. While on a mission, to resolve a border dispute, crossfires were shot and we were forced to take action. He lost his life and I barely escaped."
She smiles a little sad to Thea, but continues. "When I returned to Coruscant, I felt I was kept under close watch, by the council. And in the end, I had had enough and decided to leave. I lived on the planet called Naboo, a very peaceful place. While I ended up thinking, that my decision had been rash, I learned a lot about the people on the planet. But, I decided to come back, when I visited Coruscant five years after I left."

Thea nods slowly, unsure what to say. She hadn't known her teacher had had a Padawan in the past and she wonders what else the teachers kept inside. What they didn't want to tell them.
After a minute she says simply, "I'm sorry"

Leyla smiles and pads Thea's shoulder, gently. "Don't be. It was wrong of me, to me so emtional about it. It's not the Jedi way. Of course, I had hoped, that he would have finished his training. But, there are lessons to be taught from the mistakes both he and I made on that mission. And ... one of my mistakes were, that I blamed myself for what happened and that lead to me leaving. But, I'm glad that I came back.

Thea nods.
"But that helps. If you were perfect, how could we hope to be like you or feel that we could achieve what you do. Master Yoda is so intimidating because he does look perfect, we will never measure up to him. But teachers who admit they aren't perfect let us see that we can some day be masters too, that it isn't too hard."

Leyla thinks for a moment, about Thea's words. They made sense to a younling, that they wish to be like their teachers. But, there was still something wrong about those thoughts.
"It is not the Jedi way, to speak loud about, what they are capable of or not. It is wrong to think, that one person is superior to their friends and allies. Even their enemies. The Fallen Jedi, mau have been of that thought, that they were superior to the rest of us. But, every person, whether they'd want to admit it or not, has their flaws. Even Master Yoda, even though you may not see that. But that is because, you, like the rest of us, respect him, very highly."

Thea thinks for a moment, nodding.
"I understand that Jedi don't rank themselves by strength, Master Yoda has been quite firm on that in class. But sometimes it feels like we are so small and I can't figure things out and there is so much to learn. Like I will never make it to the Trials, much less pass them, but having teachers that let us see that they aren't perfect... well then perhaps we don't have to learn everything or be perfect to be a Jedi and maybe just growing up and doing our best is enough."

Leyla thinks about what she says. It was interesting to hear a Younglings' view on that subject.
The elevator doors open and she steps out, not really sure, which floor they're on, but doesn't seem to notice. She waits for Thea to step out, before continuing.
"You know, it is always a wise decision, to be mindful of the future. But ..." She bites her lip, while thinking what to say. "... but I would also recommend, that you keep your feet on the ground and remember, that you have time on your side. Coming to the point of where you are up for the trials, is many years ahead of you. And, you will not have to worry about it, because you will not be thrown into it unprepared. Your future Master will, by then, take it up with the council, and not a moment sooner."
She starts walking, while looking down the hall. "A Jedi, is never perfect. But admitting it, is not something they want to admit right away, to everyone. But, unfortunately, for those who wants to hide something, it can be easy for another Jedi to detect, that something has occured, shouldn't have happened. They mostly only want to admit it, if there's a lesson to be taught from that."
She sighs as she continues. "My flaw, back then, was both my Padawan, Shi'tan, and my own cockiness. I think we both thought too much of ourselves and thought we could handle the crisis we had got envolved in, without backup. To this day, I would say, that the planet in question, is still having the same crisis and wants nothing to do, with the Republic."

Thea follows Leyla off the elevator and down the hall. She listens carefully trying to learn as much as she can.
"I understand, Master. I don't think anyone really wants to admit mistakes, but it is helpful for us to learn from things our teachers or even the older students have done. And we really appreciate it when others are willing to share. "
She pauses for a moment, "What was the crisis? And are they not in the Republic?"
She hesitates again, wondering if she should ask the question that has been bothering her for a while, "How do you get picked as a Padawan? Who decides who is ready? And which Master you will be with? Do you get to pick your own Padawan's like from a catalogue?"
