Leyla smiles big, as Thea mentions the "Padawan's catalogue" idea. But starts with answering the first question.
"The planet we went to back then, lies in the Outer Rim, close to the Core Worlds. The Republic has little to say out there. It's mostly smugglers, gamblers, slavetraders and pirates who are the leaders out there. This planet in question, wished to make a treaty with the Republic and we were sent to negotiate. Unfortunately, one of the two native majorities on the planet, didn't wish this treaty to happen and began an uprising. Let's just say, that me and Shi'tan was caught in the middle of things, trying to resolve it, diplomatically. But we were of course, unable to choose sides, because that was not what our mission was about."
She looks a little curious at Thea, before continuing with the other question.
"Now, with the other; you've been here longer than I have, Thea. And you've seen older students getting picked as Padawans, haven't you? Besides, thinking, that Younglings are being picked out of a catalogue, but knowing what you already do know, about the process, what do you think yourself, is going to happen, when you have reached the age for it?"

Thea smiles back at Leyla.
"Well all I've really seen is that occasionally a Jedi, not one of the teachers, will come to the ship and stay for a little while and then leave with a student as a Padawan. They never really talked to me as I am too young, nothing more than a friendly hello at least. But I haven't seen the same person twice and no one ever seems to leave without a student. But how can they get to know the student enough to chose them, they aren't here long enough. Master Yoda would never answer questions about the specifics. I mean, how do the Jedi know who is old enough to be considered - is there a list? And how do they know who would be a good fit for them if they don't really know us - does someone here decide that?"

Leyla nods and listens to what Thea says, before answering.
"Well, it depends on the circumstances. Under some rare circumstances, a Master is chosen to be your teacher. But that mostly only happens, if it's an older student, whose previous Master is missing or is unable to finish the training. But what will happen to you, is that you have to realise, that your training here on the ship, is noticed and, someone like Master Yoda, has an ability to know, who can be perfect for you as a Master. It can either be a Knight, who's looking for their first apprentice or a Master. The person may not know you in person. But you are forgetting about the Force. It can tell you what the Master needs to know, in a short time. How you are as a person, how you are as a student and how your emotions can be. If the Master feels, that they and you, will be a perfect match as mentor and student, that's what makes the difference, in their decision."
She smiles. "But it can also be a person, that you know already, who chooses you as a Padawan. That was what happened when I was chosen, back when I was a Youngling myself. Which means, the possibilities are endless."

Thea nods, smiling.
"How did you pick your Padawan? Did you know Shi'tan before, or did you meet her right before deciding?"
She pauses hoping the question was not too personal. Then adds quietly.
"What happens if a student isn't ever chosen? How long will they wait?"

Leyla smiles a little teasingly. "I was stationed back home in the temple and I had met him in class a couple of times. I didn't even know, that I was looking for a Padawan then. But I felt, that the time was right. And I felt, that he was the right student for me."
She takes a deep breath, thinking what to answer on the other question.
"Just because I tell this to you, you shouldn't worry about not being chosen. It is harder for older students then you, to bond with other Masters, then who they already has been training with for years, when they are forced to it. But, Younglings are mostly chosen at the age of twelve. Some times, it can happen a little earlier, but rarely. But ..." she sighs a little. "... if Younglings are not chosen, after they turn 13, different arrangements are made for them."

Thea nods.
"So in a couple of months I need to be ready to go, and there is no reason to panic for another year. How do we find out? I mean will the Jedi or Master tell one of you and you tell us? Or will they come up to us and tell us... me... themselves?"

Leyla shakes her head a little.
"They will prefer to tell it themselves. But, you don't need to rush into packing, just as soon as you turn 12. As soon as you are chosen, there will be a short period, where you will finish what you need to finish here and then the rest of your journey towards being a Jedi Knight will start."

Thea giggles a little.
"No, Master, I won't go packing right away. But I want to be ready mentally for someone to come up to me. I want to be able to respond properly and with the right respect and not be caught completely off guard by my future Master."

Leyla smiles and nods.
"I understand. And I do understand, why you worry about it. It's your future we're talking about. And it all depends on, whether or not that you are picked. Every Jedi goes through those thoughts, when they are at your age. It's happened very rarely, that a Youngling is not picked in time and the Jedi Order has a lot of Masters or Knights, who are expecting to pick a new student. But I don't think you can prepare for something like that. Mostly because, you don't know who it's going to be or when. Either way, it can be surprising."

Thea nods.
"I know that there is no way for me to know for certain when I will be picked or by who. But understanding how it works helps me feel less nervous. I like knowing how things work. Did you approach your Padawan in a class or in his room? Or just in a hallway? I'm sure everyone does it differently..."

Leyla smiles and nods.
"I can see what you mean. I've seen that same reaction from students at your age. Everyone is nervous about not getting picked. But, I wouldn't say, that you need to fear. And I would say, that in my oppinion, the master in question, would want to tell it in private. That would mean, there's less reason to be interrupted. That was what I did, when I took on Shi'tan."

"You're welcome."
She's silent a moment, as she continues to walk down the hall.
"Have you given any thought about, what kind of work inside the Order, you would be interested to to, when you get older?"

Thea follows Leyla quietly thinking for a minute.
"I really like helping people so I think I would like to be a Healer, or perhaps a negotiator. Maybe a teacher or librarian someday - but I know I need more experience before I could think about those."

"Those are some clever choices. But yes, it might be a good idea, to look into it more first. Though, I knew from my own Padawan stage, that I wanted to teach other Jedis and hoped that I could take on a Padawan. Now, I'm glad with where I'm staying today. Helping all you Younglings, you know."

Thea nods smiling.
"I want to try as many different 'jobs' as I can while I'm still learning. That way I can do what I'm best at and what will help the most people in the long run."
