Name: Syll’kann
Race: Twi'lek, male
Age: 54 years
Homeplanet: Ryloth (raised at Coruscant)
Profession: Jedi Master
Hight: 2,20 m
Weight: 89 kg
Languages: Ryll, lekku, Huttese, Basic, Bothan, Wookie, Corellian, Gungan, Togruta, Sullustan, Rodian, some dialects of the Hapan language.
Hair colour: None
Eye colour: Midnight blue
Appearance:
Syll’kann is easy to spot in a crowd, considering his height. Apart from that though, there is nothing impressive about his figure. He is neither broad-shouldered nor muscular. He is sinewy and slender, but do not judge his strength from appearance. At second glance one might notice the slender muscles that ripple just underneath his skin. His skin is a greyish blue, with slight hints of yellow, and his eyes are of so deep a blue that looking into them gives the impression of starring into a bottomless well. His face is thin, almost skinny and there is a reptile look to it. Syll’kann’s own words for describing his face are: a mug like a lizard.
Syll’kann has an upright bearing, but is forever marked by an old war injury, which affected his left knee badly. He walks with a limp, and sometimes has to support himself against a wall or a column to rest. His right upper arm is marred by a serial number tattoo.
Syll’kann’s body language reflects his bearing; Calm, patient and considered movements. His voice is soft, but with a strong and sharp edge to it, which allows it to cut through even the worst of background noises. Although it is not often he speaks in large assemblies – only if he thinks he has anything of value to add to the conversation. When he does speak, he gesticulates with his thin hands to emphasize his words. If there are other Twi’leks among the crowd, Syll’kann uses his long, slender lekku – a status symbol on his home planet – in the conversation. A habit he is unable to put down completely, even in the company of non Twi’leks.
Normally Syll’kann is dressed in a long Jedi tunic in a coarse fabric in a reddish brown colour. His under tunic is black. Along the borders of the outer tunic there are embroideries of black characters in a language that few but Syll’kann understand (gungan). Should he dare to go on mission, he has been known to wear a long, loose-fitting tunic, a long coat and light boots. Despite his height, he is quite skilled in blending in with the shadows.
Syll’kann’s face is often frozen in absent, cold “mask”, but he is nevertheless always alert and watchful of his surroundings. The midnight blue eyes spot everything with their sharp, piercing gaze. However, not to seem frightening, a friendly smile is never deep below the surface, if you choose to address him.
Abilities:
Syll’kannn speaks many languages and throughout his time at the Jedi Temple, he has studied several professions, such as diplomacy, literature, art, culture, linguistics, politics, philosophy, psychology, history, political science and astronomy.
Fighting is not something Syll’kannn engages voluntarily. He does own a lightsaber, but rarely uses it, as it hurts like Kessel to move like that nowadays. He once was a competent duellist, but that was more than 20 years ago. Now, he prefers a diplomatic solution, instead of aggressive negotiations.
Personality:
Syll’kannn has a calm and friendly disposition. He is well-liked and known to rarely, if ever to lose control of his temper. And he cherishes a deep devotion and love to his surroundings and the galaxy. He is inspiring, but is focused on teaching Younglings to think and act on their own, and to follow their own instincts. Trusting the older, grandfather-like Twi’lek with the subdued humour comes easily to most people.
He is a pleasant listener, but he doesn’t mind engaging himself in discussions. However if you ask him anything personal do not expect an answer. Syll’kannn keeps his emotions hidden behind his sinewy face. It’s a struggle to get him to talk about his feelings, mostly because he finds it difficult.
Syll’kannn is highly intelligent and constantly thirsts for more knowledge to store in his sharp memory. If something is intriguing him, he squints slightly, and his lekku squirms slightly.
When it comes to Syll’kannn’s flaws it is worth mentioning that he is often far too kind, and spends more time pondering things than he should. The cold, distant look often appears on his face when his having inner discussions with himself.
Outwardly Syll’kannn is everything a Jedi Master is supposed to be. But internally he is tormented by feelings, awoken more than 20 years ago. Feelings that the Jedi Order will always consider forbidden.
Background:
As many other Forcesensitives, Syll’kannn was handed over to the Jedi Order shortly after his birth at Ryloth. He grew up in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where he stayed, until he at the age of 11 was captured by pirates, on a stroll outside the protective walls of the temple. He was taken away from the planet and sold as a slave to a Hutt. He only managed to survive due to his flypaper memory and the force. His life as a slave lasted almost a year, until finally Jedi Master Trinol Leosco freed him and took him back to Coruscant. Here, the young twi’lek became the Padawan of the old Quarren. Leosco took him under his wings, trained him and taught him of the ways of the force. Not many months passed before Syll’kannn felt as close to his Master, as a son to his father. He trained hard to make his Master proud and also shared Leoscos passion for gathering knowledge. Together, they spend many hours in the Temple archives, or they would engage in long discussions when walking in the temple corridors.
Syll’kannn had just turned 25 and passed the final trials, when his Master died. Leosco had been battling his failing health for quite some time, but hadn’t let it show to anyone, least of all his Padawan, who he wanted to be focused on passing the trials, not his dying Master. Syll’kannn watched over his Master the night he became one with the force. It was a hard on the young Twi’lek to lose the old Quarren, who had meant so much to him while growing up. However, he did not let anyone see his grief and pain, as he kept those feelings hidden deep inside.
As a Jedi Knight, Syll’kannn distinguished himself as a field negotiator. His aversion to violence was quickly known among both friend and foe. Should he however reach for his lightsaber, he turned out to be a formidable opponent.
Syll’kannn’s active service came to an abrupt end, when he was severely injured during a mission in the Outer Rim, where he and his group encountered some Fallen Jedi. Syll’kann was the only survivor, but he was badly injured, and more dead than alive, when he was brought to a Republic hospital ship. Here, he came under the care of a Twi’lek doctor named Ladda.
None of them saw it coming, and none of them were able to resist, when stronger feelings arose between the young Jedi and the Twi’lek doctor. Their time together was short, but they exchanged several kisses, before Syll’kannn had to leave Ladda and return to Coruscant. More than 20 years passed before they saw each other again.
After the encounter with the Fallen Jedi, Syll’kannn’s knee was permanently damaged, and he was never fully able to walk again. He withdrew from active service, and now spends his time pottering about in the Jedi-archives, where he offers his wisdom and knowledge to anybody requiring help. He has however been granted the title “Jedi Master”, and is allowed to take a padawan, should he ever want to.
Ladda still occupies his mind, but he keeps those thoughts hidden from everyone around him. Even Ladda. Syll’kannn is too traditional a Jedi to tell her how he feels – and besides a Jedi Master is not allowed to love.
